Fujifilm has added a 100-200mm telephoto zoom to its GF lens range for its medium format GFX 50S and 50R cameras. The FUJINON GF100-200mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR is the second GF zoom alongside the GF32-64mm F4 R LM WR standard zoom and takes the total number of GF lenses up to eight.
It’s effectively a short telephoto zoom for the GFX system designed for flexibility and portability. It’s not exactly light at 1,050g, but it’s a good deal lighter than Fujifilm’s GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR telephoto prime, which weighs 1,425g.
The GF100-200mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR has a 2x zoom range and a constant aperture of f/5.6, both of which are low by 35mm standards but very acceptable for a medium format zoom lens. This focal range is equivalent to 79-158mm in full frame camera terms and it can be extended with Fujifilm’s GF1.4X TC WR 1.4x teleconverter to offer an increased focal range of 140-280mm at f/8 (equivalent to 111-221mm) with no image quality deterioration.
The new lens is equipped with seals in ten areas to make it dust and weather-resistant and can operate in temperatures as low as -10 degrees. It features a smooth and silent autofocus system driven by a linear motor. It also has a 5-stop (CIPA) optical image stabiliser.
The internal optical construction consists of 20 elements in 13 groups, including two super ED lenses and one aspherical lens. Fujifilm is aiming this lens at landscape and nature photographers (the GFX 50S and 50R are not really sports cameras), where its weatherproofing will be an additional advantage and its 5-stop stabiliser should allow sharper shots with handheld shooting.
The combination of a big sensor, 50-megapixel sensor and super-sharp GF lenses means that these GFX models are more sensitive to camera shake than others, as even the slightest movement can take the edge off the resolution, so an optical stabiliser is especially welcome.
